Explain the difficulties that arise in measuring poverty in the UK. How may poverty be reduced?
SYNOPSIS:
A two-part question. Poverty must first be defined, comment on the problems in this. Describe how it may be measured and the difficulties in collecting accurate figures - especially how poverty will change according to the needs of the family (ie as children grow older). Ways of overcoming should include injections (eg government spending) and the elimination of the poverty trap (see taxation). Ways of reduction may be short or long term - the latter involving macro-economic policies used to increase growth and improve income distribution.
